RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Healthy lifestyle is an important protective factor of developing cardiovascular disease in people with schizophrenia. However, little is known about the determinants of lifestyle and its contribution to metabolic syndrome. This study aimed to explore the influencing factors of health-promoting lifestyle (HPL) and its association with metabolic syndrome among people with schizophrenia. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in twenty-two primary health centers of Guangzhou, China between December 2022 and April 2023. A total of 538 patients with schizophrenia were recruited through convenience sampling. Self-administered scales, questionnaires, and clinical data were collected. Scales and questionnaires included social-demographic information, Health-Promoting Lifestyles Profile (HPLP-C), UCLA Loneliness Scale (ULS), and International Physical Activity Questionnaire-Short Form (IPAQ-SF). Cluster analyses were used to divide participants into two groups based on the distribution characteristics of HPLP-C scores. Logistic regression models were used to identify factors associated with HPL and the association between HPL and metabolic syndrome. RESULTS: There were 271 participants in the high HPL group and 267 participants in the low HPL group. Logistic regression analysis revealed that loneliness posed a risk factor for high HPL, while high education and moderate-vigorous physical activity served as protective factors for high HPL. Low HPL was a risk factor for the prevalence of metabolic syndrome. CONCLUSIONS: Promotion of high education literacy and a physically active lifestyle should be priority targets in the health management of schizophrenia. Primary healthcare providers can play a pivotal role in assisting patients to mitigate metabolic syndrome by reinforcing healthy lifestyle strategies.

RESUMO

Suicide has aroused global concern, and a better understanding of the complex interactions between suicide ideation and various psychopathological features is critical. We aimed to explore the complex interplays among adolescents. This study adopted a multistage stratified cluster sampling method and recruited adolescents aged 12 to 20 year-old from 8 middle and high schools between December 2020 and September 2021 in Guangzhou, China. We assessed loneliness, social support, bullying victimization, depressive symptoms, and suicidal ideation. We used network analysis to examine the network structure of the correlates of suicidal ideation and identify central symptoms and bridge symptoms. We used case-drop bootstrapping and correlation stability coefficients to examine the stability of the network. Among 8686 adolescents, 347 (4 %) adolescents reported suicidal ideation in the past two weeks. Network analyses identified 'hopeless', 'psychomotor', and 'failure' were the three strongest edges linked to suicidal ideation. The most central nodes were identified as 'hopeless' being the most central node, followed by loneliness and verbal bullying victimization, while sexual bullying victimization, sex, and relational bullying were the strongest bridging symptoms. The findings shed light on the complexity of associations of suicidal ideation and could provide insight into school-based suicide risk assessment and prevention for adolescents.

RESUMO

In recent years, antibiotics pollution has caused serious harm to the aquatic environment, and microalgae mediated degradation of antibiotics has attracted increasing attention. However, the potential toxicity of antibiotics to keystone microalgae species or their microalgae consortia, and the impact of microalgal diversity on antibiotic removal need to be further studied. In this study, we investigated the removal efficiency and tolerance of five freshwater microalgae (Chlorella pyrenoidosa, Scenedesmus quadricauda, Dictyosphaerium sp., Haematoccocus pluvialis, and Botryococcus braunii) and their microalgae consortia to sulfamethoxazole (SMX). We found that the removal efficiency of SMX by C. pyrenoidosa reached 49%, while the other four microalgae ranged between 9% and 16%. In addition, C. pyrenoidosa, S. quadricauda, and Dictyosphaerium sp. had better tolerance to SMX than H. pluvialis, and their growth and photosynthesis were less affected. At 10 and 50 mg/L SMX, the removal capacity of SMX by mixed microalgae consortia was lower than that of C. pyrenoidos except for the consortium with C. pyrenoidos and S. quadricauda. The consortia generally showed higher sensitivity towards SMX than the individual species, and the biochemical characteristics (photosynthetic pigment, chlorophyll fluorescence parameters, superoxide anion (O2 -), superoxide dismutase activity (SOD), malondialdehyde (MDA) and extracellular enzymes) were significantly influenced by SMX stress. Therefore, the removal of antibiotics by microalgae consortia did not increase with the number of microalgae species. Our study provides a new perspective for the selection of microalgal consortia to degrade antibiotics.

RESUMO

The 686 Program has covered mainland China but lacks empirical research. We aimed to examine potential influencing factors associated with the registration and management of the Program. 3993 patients with schizophrenia discharged in 2019 were included. We found that approximately two-thirds of patients were registered. 88.9 % registered patients accepted the follow-up management. Males, unemployment, lower education, longer duration of illness, more hospitalization positively affected the registration and management. Individuals with violent behavior and local Hukou were more likely to be registered. Future evaluation of the Program should take these factors into account.

RESUMO

The application of animal manure is highly recommended in agricultural production. However, the effect of different kinds of manures on bacterial community in farmland still remains unclear. In this study, a short-term field experiment was conducted to investigate the rapid effects of pig manure (PM), chicken manure (CM) and organic fertilizer (OF, composted by pig manure) application on soil physicochemical properties and soil bacterial community. The results showed that the application of CM and OF significantly increased soil bacterial richness (p < 0.05), mainly correlated with the increase of soil total nitrogen. Compared with CM and PM, OF had the greatest disturbance to soil bacterial structure. And total phosphorus showed the highest correlation with bacterial community. Meanwhile, the application of OF reduced the relative abundance of Actinobacteria, the organic matter synthetic bacteria, and Nitrospirae, the nitrifying bacteria, by 17.18% and 40.00%, respectively. 16S functional prediction analysis results shows that the application of OF increased the relative abundance of genes encoding Ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxyg (RuBsiCO), the genes involved in soil Calvin cycling, by 20.51%, and increased the relative abundance of genes encoding nitrous-oxide reductase by 44.86%. In conclusion, Short-term application of OF had greater disturbance to soil bacteria than CM and PM, and it had a significant influence on soil functional bacteria and genes involved in soil carbon and nitrogen cycling.

RESUMO

The brackish tidal marsh in the Baimaosha area of the Yangtze River Estuary was severely contaminated by 400 tons of heavy crude petroleum from a tanker that sank in December 2012. The spill accident led to severe environmental damage owing to its high toxicity, persistence and wide distribution. Microbial communities play vital roles in petroleum degradation in marsh sediments. Therefore, taxonomic analysis, high-throughput sequencing and 16S rRNA functional prediction were used to analyze the structure and function of microbial communities among uncontaminated (CK), lightly polluted (LP), heavily polluted (HP), and treated (TD) sediments. The bacterial communities responded with increased richness and decreased diversity when exposed to petroleum contamination. The dominant class changed from Deltaproteobacteria to Gammaproteobacteria after petroleum contamination. The phylum Firmicutes increased dramatically in oil-enriched sediment by 75.78%, 346.19% and 267.26% in LP, HP and TD, respectively. One of the suspected oil-degrading genera, Dechloromonas, increased the most in oil-contaminated sediment, by 540.54%, 711.27% and 656.78% in LP, HP and TD, respectively. Spore protease, quinate dehydrogenase (quinone) and glutathione-independent formaldehyde dehydrogenase, three types of identified enzymes, increased enormously with the increasing petroleum concentration. In conclusion, petroleum contamination altered the community composition and microorganism structure, and promoted some bacteria to produce the corresponding degrading enzymes. Additionally, the suspected petroleum-degrading genera should be considered when restoring oil-contaminated sediment.

RESUMO

The recent outbreak of a novel coronavirus pneumonia (COVID-19) may have acute psychological consequences, both in relation to the impact of the virus itself and the restrictions imposed to tackle its spread. We conducted an online survey of 403 residents in Guangzhou, China. We found the prevalence of anxiety (defined as Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 score ≥5) was 37.7%, and anxiety was significantly and moderately correlated with worry about COVID-19. Higher anxiety levels in community residents was associated with the presence of individuals with COVID-19 in the same building; a longer time spent each day gathering information about the virus; and choosing social media as their preferred source of information. Our findings provide an insight into the psychological support and guidance about information sources that are required in this type of public health emergency.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The suicide pattern in China is changing to a predominance of older people. However, little is known about the impact of suicide on the family members of elderly decedents. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether the suicidal death of rural older adults in China increases the odds of depression or suicidal ideation among their relatives and to explore the associated risk factors. METHODS: In a national psychological autopsy study in China, consecutive samples of suicide decedents aged 60 or above and matched living controls were enrolled in rural areas of three provinces. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to explore the occurrence and correlates of depression and suicidal ideation among relatives of elderly suicide decedents. RESULTS: A total of 242 suicide decedents and 242 living controls were identified. We enrolled 245 relatives of suicide decedents and 205 relatives of living controls. No significant differences in depression or suicide ideation were found between the relatives of suicide decedents and living comparisons after controlling for socio-demographic characteristics (depression: 26.5% vs. 21.5%; suicide ideation: 5.7% vs. 2.9%). A mood disorder diagnosis in the suicide decedent (OR = 1.93, 95% CI 1.12-3.52) and a spouse relationship (OR = 3.62, 95% CI 1.40-9.34) were independent risk factors for depression among relatives of suicide decedents. Spouses (OR = 5.91, 95% CI 1.49-23.38) were more likely to have suicidal ideation than other relatives. LIMITATIONS: there are methodological limitations in psychological autopsy studies. CONCLUSIONS: It seems that the suicide of an older adult 2-6 months ago has no significant impact on depressive symptoms and suicidal ideation in their relatives. Proactive support should be provided for spouses of suicide decedents and those whose relatives have a mood disorder diagnosis.

RESUMO

Flos Chimonanthi Praecocis (FCP) is one of the popular traditional Chinese medicines, which have been widely used in China. Inconspicuous appearance differences are disadvantageous for identification, and it is difficult to evaluate the quality of FCP using the current methods. In this article, a simple method that combined chemometrics and quantitative analysis was established. The samples were obtained from three typical varieties for fingerprint analysis by high-performance liquid chromatography. Contents of rutin and quercetin were determined, and then a common pattern with 16 characteristic peaks was applied for principal component analysis, similarity analysis, and the hierarchical cluster analysis heatmap (HCA heatmap) to characterize the similarity and differences among samples for identification. Furthermore, seven characteristics peaks with higher loading values were selected for chemometrics analysis after dimensionality reduction to reduce analytical difficulty, and the new common pattern showed the similar identification effects. Overall, combination with chemometrics and quantitative analysis would provide a useful and simple method for quality control of FCP in the future.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the infection status and virulent genes of Aeromonas in patients with acute diarrhea in Pudong New Area, Shanghai. METHODS: In 2012, stool samples were collected from diarrhea patients in 12 sentinel hospitals in Pudong for the detections of 13 pathogens causing diarrhea, and the detections of 5 diarrhea related virulent genes were conducted for Aeromonas isolates. RESULTS: A total of 101 patients were infected with Aeromonas in 2533 patients (4.0%). A total of 101 Aeromonas strains were isolated, including 17 Aeromonas hydrophila strains (18.8%), 44 Aeromonas veronii biovar sobria strains (52.5%) and 12 Aeromonas caviae strains (29.7%). And 44 coinfections with other pathogens were detected. Aeromonas infection mainly occurred in summer and in people aged ≥20 years. Among the patients infected with Aeromonas, 71 (70.3%) had watery diarrhea, 20 (19.8%) had vomiting and 11 (10.9%) had fever. Virulent genes detection showed that 95.0% of the Aeromonas. strains carried virulent genes, and the detection rates of hlyA, aerA, act, alt, and ast genes were 5.9%, 6.9%, 67.3%, 42.6% and 13.9%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: High incidence of Aeromonas infection was found in the patients with acute diarrhea in Pudong, and a high proportion of coinfections with other pathogens was detected too. Most Aeromonas strains carried virulent genes, and the distribution varied.

RESUMO

Citri Fructus identification by fingerprint and chemometrics was investigated in this paper. Twenty-three Citri Fructus samples were collected which referred to two varieties as Cirtus wilsonii and C. medica recorded in Chinese Pharmacopoeia. HPLC chromatograms were obtained. The components were partly identified by reference substances, and then common pattern was established for chemometrics analysis. Similarity analysis, principal component analysis (PCA) , partial least squares-discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) and hierarchical cluster analysis heatmap were applied. The results indicated that C. wilsonii and C. medica could be ideally classified with common pattern contained twenty-five characteristic peaks. Besides, preliminary pattern recognition had verified the chemometrics analytical results. Absolute peak area (APA) was used for relevant quantitative analysis, results showed the differences between two varieties and it was valuable for further quality control as selection of characteristic components.

RESUMO

Macrophages polarized to M1 (pro-inflammation) or M2 (anti-inflammation) phenotypes in response to environmental signals. In this study, we examined the polarization of alveolar macrophage (AM), following induction by different influenza virus strains (ST169 (H1N1), ST602 (H3N2) and HKG9 (H9N2)). Macrophages from other tissues or cell line exert alternative responding pattern, and AM is necessary for investigating the respiratory system. AM polarized toward the M1 phenotype after 4 hours of infection by all three virus strains, and AM to presented M2b phenotype after 8 hours induction, and immunosuppressive phenotype after 24 hours of induction. Protein expression assay showed similar results as the gene expression analysis for phenotype verification. The ELISA assay showed that TNF-α secretion was up-regulated after 4 and 8 hours of infection by influenza viruses, and it returned to basal levels after 24 hours of infection. IL-10 expression was elevated after 8 and 24 hours of infection. Immunofluorescence showed that iNOS expression was up-regulated but not Arg1 expression. Influenza virus notably increased phospho-Akt but not phospho-Erk1/2 or phospho-p38, and the AM polarization pattern have been changed by LY294002 (PI3K inhibitor). In conclusion, our results demonstrate the dynamic polarization of AM induced by influenza viruses, and suggested that PI3K/Akt signaling pathway modulates AM polarization to M1/M2b.

RESUMO

Near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) has been widely applied in both qualitative and quantitative analysis. There is growing interest in its application to traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and a review of recent developments in the field is timely. To present an overview of recent applications of NIRS to the identification, classification and analysis of TCM products, studies describing the application of NIRS to TCM products are classified into those involving qualitative and quantitative analysis. In addition, the application of NIRS to the detection of illegal additives and the rapid assessment of quality of TCMs by fast inspection are also described. This review covers over 100 studies emphasizing the application of NIRS in different fields. Furthermore, basic analytical principles and specific examples are used to illustrate the feasibility and effectiveness of NIRS in pattern identification. NIRS provides an effective and powerful tool for the qualitative and quantitative analysis of TCM products.

RESUMO

Little is known about the risk factors for suicide among psychiatric inpatients in China. In this study we identified the risk factors of suicide among psychiatric inpatients at Guangzhou Psychiatric Hospital. All psychiatric inpatients who died by suicide during the 1956-2005 period were included in this study. Using a case-control design, 64 inpatients with schizophrenia who died by suicide were compared with a matched 64 controls. The results indicate that the rate of suicide was 133.1/100,000 admissions (95%CI 103.4-162.9). There were no significant differences in the method, location, or time of suicide between male and female inpatients. The number of hospitalizations was significantly larger in the suicide group than that in the control group. In logistic regression analyses, guilty thought, depressive mood, and suicidal ideation and suicide attempt 1 month before hospital admission were identified as independent predictors of suicide among inpatients with schizophrenia. The findings of risk factors for schizophrenic inpatient suicide should be taken into account when developing interventions to prevent suicide among these patients.
